Rushing toward success

The Birdville Hawks believe they had a breakthrough year.

They shared the District 7-4A title, made their first trip to the playoffs and won a postseason game for the first time.

Now the program has to build on its 9-3 season, which ended Friday with a 24-17 loss to Sherman in the Class 4A Division I regional semifinals.

"Hopefully this sets the tone for the future for us," senior quarterback Andy Braly said. "We've got a lot of young guys coming back that got some good experience this year. They have to take a lot from this."

Birdville's season included plenty of highlights. The Hawks rolled off six consecutive victories, piled up offensive yards and played a ball-hawking defense that netted 44 turnovers in 12 games.

The team finished its last three games without coach Jim Skinner, who underwent quadruple heart-bypass surgery. He hopes to return in January.

"All the credit goes to the coaches," Skinner said. "They carried on and didn't miss a beat, and the kids rallied around them. This season never would have happened without them."

The next edition of the Hawks will have plenty of new faces. Braly, who accounted for more than 3,000 yards of offense, is gone along with a dozen other starters, including offensive lineman Matt Orr, running back Kyle Talley and receivers Devin Kelly and Chase Hayes. Defensively, the Hawks will have to replace standouts like linebacker Charles Tonga and lineman Derrek Wageneck.

But the talent pool appears deep. Freshman Tommy Dorman backed up Braly and will take over at quarterback. All-around standout Jason Martinson -- who ended the season by intercepting a pass, returning a fumble for a touchdown and catching a touchdown pass in the Hawks' loss to Sherman -- will be a junior next year. Birdville's backups also earned experience late in district games as the Hawks outscored their District 7-4A counterparts 278-83.

"I know we have a lot of talent with the underclassmen," Wageneck said. "Obviously we're all disappointed with losing to Sherman, but I'm glad I was here the season we started winning at Birdville."

Birdville comes up short where it counts

Star-Telegram Staff Writer

As well as the Birdville Hawks were throwing the ball Friday night, it was a cruel twist that the game's biggest play came down to a run.

Birdville quarterback Andy Braly was tripped up at the Sherman 19-yard line, 3 yards short of a pivotal first down in the game's final seconds, as Sherman held off the Hawks 24-17 in a Class 4A Division I Region I semifinal playoff game.

Sherman (9-3) will face either El Paso Andres or Wolfforth Frenship in the regional final. The Hawks end their first playoff season at 9-3.

"We had a chance, but we just came up a little bit short," Birdville interim coach Gary Helzer said. "It boiled down to being three yards away on a fourth-down play late. It doesn't get any closer than that."

Braly's scramble came on a fourth-and-16 play with 23 seconds remaining after he was flushed out of the pocket. He was tripped at the 22 and dove to the 19. The 13-yard run was Birdville's longest running play of the night, as the Hawks had only 27 yards on 27 carries. But a season-high 280 passing yards from Braly and a 68-yard yard fumble return by Jason Martinson left Birdville with a chance late in the game.

Birdville led 10-7 at halftime, but a fumble on the kickoff to open the third quarter led to a game-tying field goal, and Sherman went ahead with 5:05 remaining in the third on a 5-yard run by quarterback Trey Carter. Carter and Michael Cowart hooked up for a 30-yard score with 8:57 remaining, and Sherman was in control.

But a botched reverse was fumbled by Kelvin Fields, and Martinson picked the ball up and gave the Hawks some life late in the game. Birdville forced a punt and took over at its 23 with 2:26 remaining. Birdville converted two long third downs and had a first down at the Sherman 25 with 52 seconds remaining. A sack, an incompletion and a short completion left the Hawks in the fourth-and-long predicament.

Braly and Martinson (6 catches, 80 yards) hooked up on a 25-yard pass play to tie the game at 7 in the second quarter. Jordan Walker gave the Hawks a 10-7 halftime lead with a 29-yard field goal.

But Sherman controlled the third quarter, with Justin Taylor's 60-yard run setting up Carter's touchdown and Sherman controlling the clock by running the ball (31 rushes, 178 yards).

Birdville debut is a playoff success

Star-Telegram Staff Writer

Birdville proved Thursday night in its first-ever playoff game that it doesn't have to win with its offense.

The Hawks made the big plays on defense when they needed to and held off the Yellow Jackets 21-13 at Pennington Field in a Class 4A Division I Region I bi-district game.

Birdville (9-2) will play next on Nov. 19 against the winner of tonight's Sherman-Brewer game Nov. 19. Arlington Heights ends its season 7-4.

"We came out here really aggressive," said junior defensive end Alex Martinez, who teamed with Andrew Burger for a key sack on the Yellow Jackets' last drive. "We were firing off the ball real well. We felt like we'd be able to get some pressure on them."

The Hawks limited the Yellow Jackets to 191 yards of offense, had three sacks and forced three turnovers.

Birdville's offense needed the boost. While the Hawks rolled up 333 yards of offense, three turnovers left the game in doubt until the final minutes. Birdville led 21-6 early in the fourth quarter after a 10-yard touchdown run by Kyle Talley. But a 52-yard run by Arlington Heights' Manuel Williams made it 21-13 with 6:09 remaining.

The Yellow Jackets then forced a punt, and they got the ball back at their 35 with 3:57 remaining. But two sacks on the drive hurt the Yellow Jackets, and the drive stalled at the 50 on a Jeff Jones incompletion with 1:10 remaining.

"We just didn't execute," said Jones, the Yellow Jackets' junior quarterback who had 82 passing yards but was intercepted twice. "I didn't handle the ball well, and we had too many turnovers."

Birdville led 7-6 at halftime as Andy Braly (172 rushing yards, 70 passing) scored on a 35-yard run only to have a long kickoff return by Dominic Franco set up a 5-yard run by Dino Walker. But a missed extra point enabled the Hawks to take the lead at the break.

Braly and Devin Kelly connected on a 36-yard scoring play early in the third quarter to put the Hawks up 14-6, and Birdville got into scoring position on its next drive before Braly was intercepted in the end zone.
